My first dinner choice in Tokyo was Katsudon-ya Zuicho, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a small and cozy place, so there can be a wait during peak hours, but it’s definitely worth it. The meal started with a soup that was warm and comforting, a perfect way to begin. For the main dish, the panko-crusted fried pork was perfectly cooked and crispy, and the eggs underneath were incredibly delicious. The food was served at just the right temperature, which made the whole meal even more enjoyable. Even though I don’t speak Japanese, I was able to communicate with some English, and the staff were very welcoming and cheerful throughout. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and a great first meal in Tokyo.

I arrived at 10:30 AM and was the first in line. Google stated that they open at 11:30 AM, but they actually started taking orders around 11:00 AM and seated us shortly after. The restaurant only has 8 seats, so it’s quite limited. The pork katsu was crispy and delicious, and the egg paired beautifully with the sauce. It combined the sweetness of the sauce perfectly with the saltiness of the katsu, while the rice balanced the entire meal superbly. Since seating is limited, I left promptly after finishing my meal. By the time I stepped outside, there was already a long queue forming.

As good as I remembered it 9 years ago. They have branded t-shirts now, more staff and a better system for getting into the restaurant. But the quality is still there. We got there around 6pm and the line wasn’t too bad. Juicy katsu, delicious sweet sauce, perfect katsudon runny egg. Just wonderfully made and comfort food Katsudon. Cash is ideal and there is only one item on the menu, it is pricy for what it is but totally worth it.
